VMotion CPU check has even been way enhanced with the introduction of EVC in VMware. I have even posted earlier how you can enable VMotion without any problems between different CPU generation using VMware EVC. I thought I will share this with you and your reader. The info can be found at:

http://www.virtualizationteam.com/virtualizatio...

Thanks,
Virtualization Master

If the VM's are critical you are probably using HA for stateless clustering or MSCS. Or in the future, Fault Tolerance.

VMotion is indeed used to prevent downtime for the guest OS. That's the strength of the feature, and that's not what QuickMigration does. That's the point that Gabe is trying to make.

So regardless of whether you are using Vmotion to move machines around, if they are that critical what else are you doing to protect the service that those machines provide? VMotion is useful for planned downtime of the host, and for load redistribution but it doesn't provide your application with any protection should the host fail, or should the guest OS fail. VMotion/Live Migration is only part of the protection story (and yes, it is useful and I wouldn't say otherwise).

On the CPU checking thing, I believe that the CPU check is actually done at the time you create the cluster, not at the time of failover. If they are different that gets flagged as a warning. That's my understanding at least.

And yes, there is some storage wastage in the current release, that is addressed in R2.

Cheers

Stu
