VMworld day 1: Live blogging from Keynote

This morning we’re starting with the keynote. The auditorium is pretty crowed and the wifi is saturated. Not sure how much live blogging I can do.

Mauritzio is opening the keynote again. He talks about attendance growing from 4500 (2008), 4700 (2009) and >6000 attendees this year. The VMare User Group has grown to over 50.000 members.

Next on stage is Rick Jackson, Chief Marketing VMware. He is going to explain this year’s motto: “Virtual Roads, Actual Clouds”. In which the virtual roads (vSphere) help you to offer real clouds to your business. The best example of Actual Clouds: VMware delivers all the labs at VMworld EU, from data centers based at Terramark and Verizon in the US. The Cloud is real.

Rick is talking about some customer stories, like Levi Strauss and Siemens. “We can offer applications to business as fast and flexibily as business can consume”, that is how agile the cloud is these days.

Virtualization is moving to the next fase, moving from optimizing production of IT services to optimizing business consumption of IT services.

On stage Paul Maritz, CEO of VMware. He shows us that 2009 has been the tipping point where for the first time, the number of virtual machines has outnumbered the number of physical machines. There has been a 28% growth of deployed VMs.

What are the implications of this high level of virtualization? One for example is the OS no longer controlling the hardware. Virtualization has become the new layer in the datacenter and this is where the innovations occur.

In the next several years we will be seeing more automation and management of this new (virtualization) infrastructure. Thereby decreasing OpEx.

In the past years, we have spent much attention to Compute, Storage and Networking in the infrastructure layer and we will now see more efforts for enhanced security.

Paul is now talking about the virtual datacenters, the private cloud. Making sure that Coke’s and Pepsi’s VMs will never mix :-) Making sure that high level performance VMs and low level VMs will not interfere.

Connecting your private cloud with the service provider cloud, making it possible to move your virtual datacenter from your private cloud to the service provider cloud. (Do notice that Paul is no longer talking about just moving an application, but really moving a virtual datacenter. Have a look at vCloud Director to get a better feeling on this stuf)

Big question for most businesses, are old apps on new infrastructure enough? VMware believes that, in order to fully experience the advantages of the cloud, a new application platform is needed. With new, Open Frameworks and tools (like ruby, springsource) your applications will help the business.

What is the role of the OS in this infrastructure? Developers want to develop for a framework not for an OS. The operating system will not go away but will fade into the background. ( Not sure, but wasn’t VMware convinced about a year ago that the OS would be no longer needed?) Developing for the Open Framework tools will help you make your applications ready for the cloud.

Now moving on to the desktop. We used to have only a desktop to work on, but nowadays iPads, iPhones, BlackBerries, etc are entering our network. We need device independent focus. Multiple devices and Access & Management is key. “The new stack” – New End-User access.

Next on stage: Steve Herrod, chief technology officer.

We used to call it the software mainframe, but today I would like to talk about “The Virtual Giant” – vSphere 4.1:
– Automation through policy
– Elastic Resource Scheduling
– Efficient Pooling
– Open & Interoperable

A quick view on vSphere 4.1:
(I’m doing just quick reference to the new features)
– 32 hosts per cluster
– 320 VMs per host
– 3000 VMs per cluster
– 1000 hosts per vCenter
– 8 VMotions per host at the same time
– 128 VMotion per cluster at the same time
– 5x faster VMotion than 4.0
– Storage IO Control
– Network IO Control
– vStorage API’s for Array integration

Managing the virtual Giant with the vCenter family.
– ANNOUNCEMENT: The iPad app for vCenter will be available in the AppStore this month
– ANNOUNCEMENT: AliveVM fro the Integrien acquisition. This will enable you to monitor the health of your Virtual Infrastructure even down to application level. It will also do forcasts on what problems you might expect. For example databases running out of space in xx days.

Steve now talking about the Appstore of IT, called the Service Catalog. Showing how these Services offered in the service catalog need to be secured. Like integration with directory services. Another part is the difference in SLA’s for these services, Gold, silved, bronse policies. Customers want to pay only what they really use.

(The above part is difficult to follow without the sheets, but it all comes down to this: You need VMware vCloud Directory for this)

Steve now moving from the Noisy neighbour (taking all your resources) to the Nosey Neighbour (Security). With VMware vShield you no longer protect just the virtual machine on your ESX host, but with the new VMware vShield you protect a virtual datacenter. VMware vShield App will protect traffic between virtual appliactions and VMware vShield Edge to protect your logical datacenter.

Next topic: vCloud = secure hybrid cloud computing. vCloud Datacenter services. By VMware approved / certified cloud providers.

Now going to live demo of VMware vCloud Directory.

We’re now seeing how Steve can pick from a Service Catalog (AppStore) and choose the appliaction he needs. His LAMP development environment for example. First example was Steve using vCloud based on the internal cloud and in the second example he accesses the external cloud within the same interface, showing the strenght of the integration of private and (certified) public clouds. Great stuff !!!

Next topic: Cloud application platform & VMware vFabric. Showing how applications developed using the vFabric compatible tools (like java, ruby on rails, php, etc) will make intelligent sharing possible. Easier provisioning, Easier scaling, increasede visibility. More announcements next week in Chicago.

Moving on to “New End-User acces”.

VMware View 4.5
– Win7 support
– Offline support
– Mac support
– vSphere 4.1 scalability

Total acquisition cost per User. The average corporate pc is between $600-$800. With the new View 4.5 infrastructure you can lower this to $500.

User centric IT – Project Horizon !!! (Promontory Software Inc) (Release next year)
Deliver applications to users from a central web interface. Apps will be delivered to the user seamlessly.

TriCypher will help with the identity management / security

ANNOUNCEMENT VMware View iPad application.

Great thing is that they showed how a VMware View 4.5 session seamlessly moved from a pc desktop to an iPad and back again. Also applications to which the user is entitled to, can be published as a (almost) native ipad app.

Also the Dell Streak is capable of using these apps.

( To me Project Horizon is the best info from this session )

This concludes the keynotes. Thank you for watching my live blogging !!!
