In all fairness, the features are current. They're in Hyper-V release candidate software.
This makes them a viable competitor to VMware in development and testing environments.

It does not, however, mean Hyper-V is viable in the department of running live production servers.

e.g. In lab environments, consider Hyper-V.

For your live production environments, stick with VMware or XenServer.

This is the same old tactics from Microsoft. Perhaps if they spend more of their cognitive and financial muscle into product development, they would have an enterprise ready virtualization platform.

Until they can produce a mature, working, reliable equivalent of Vmotion, their v product will never be appropriate for Enterprise virtualization deployments.

The details surrounding Hyper-V upgrades are what you need to pay attention to.

MSFT does not 'support' upgrade from Hyper-V v1 to a Hyper-V R2 beta release (the early build 7000 beta or others).

MSFT also does not 'support' upgrading between beta builds of Hyper-V R2.

When R2 releases will you be able to upgrade from V1 to R2 - most definitely.

However, as in all upgrade situations there are safe ways to upgrade and not-so safe ways to upgrade. This is the case will all manufacturers.

Refer back to the Hyper-V documentation regarding upgrading from the Hyper-V beta to the Hyper-V v1 RTM for the safe path.

Can you upgrade from Hyper-V v1 to the beta? Yea, but it isn’t just a “slap it in and go, click next and you don’t have to think type of operation.” This is why when R2 is in the pre-release stage the word ‘unsupported’ is being used. As in, do it at your own risk – we don’t claim that it does not work, but then don’t claim that it does.

If you have been working with the vSphere 4 betas, you will find that you have had to re-install your host each time. It is no different.

Would like to bring in two more points at this point of time.

Have just heard from a Microsoft Guy that , you cannot do a inplace upgrade from Windows 2008 HyperV Core to a R2 HyperV Core. So where is the point choosing Windows 2008 HyperV at this point of time ??

Again on tha mangement perspective , Virtual Center is much more cheaper when compared to the cost of complete system center suite required for managing HyperV ( Virtual machine Manager , SCOM , SCCM )

Again on Consolidation ratio , Consolidation ratio will definitely come down When there is no memory over commit since you cannot host more Virtual machines .

Having said that , Microsoft has a good product for a First Generation Hypervisor . They got to accept it and tell customers on how they will improve it in its newer versions.

But i guess , competion is just going to get hotter with ESX releasing nxt version of its ESX before HyperV R2 . This will just increase the customer demands on HyperV R2.

I completely agree with you on the way this marketing thing is getting out of hand. As an MCT and VCI I'm very frustrated by the same points you make. Why can't they keep things professional?

Hyper-V is a reasonable product for a certain market at the moment but it's not a full competitor for VMware. So what? It's good enough for some environments.

All this hype and acting as if the 2.0 version (beta) is already here annoys me to no end as well. Only talk up features which are available in a live product MS. Do they really expect us to run beta's or release candidates in production environments?

Finally all the crap about pricing irritates me as well. More than 50% of your costs will be directed to storage solutions in your average virtualization project. So the software costs are relatively unimportant.
