VMware HA in ESX 3.5

Better logging

In ESX 3.5 there is now better logging for HA failures then for ESX 3.0.x. I’ve been playing around with my DNS settings and hosts files and can confirm that the errors reported by HA are more helpfull then before.

For example:

“Configuration of host IP address is inconsistent on host esx01.vanzanten.local: address resolved to 192.168.0.1 and 127.0.0.1″  Now, That’s something I can work with :-)

HA on VM level?

In the release notes:

VMware High Availability enhancements—Enhanced high availability provides experimental support for monitoring individual virtual machine failures. VMware HA can now be set up to either restart the failed virtual machine or send a notification to the administrator.”

I can’t seem to find it. Only thing that comes close to this is the Alarms tab at VM level. Here I can make an alarm definition that can be triggerd when the VMtools are no longer responding. But is HA needed for this?

  1. Hi,
The settings for the restarts are found under the Advanced Options tab after an HA cluster is created (you cannot define these during creation). Currently as the Virtual Machine Monitoring is still experimental they do not have it setup to send the messages to the administrator. Here is everything that VMware has published on it. Hope this helps.
